"The Importance Of A Bone Graft For Dental Implant Longevity"

Bone Grafting in Preparation for Dental Implants

Bone grafting is the process of adding bone tissue samples to areas in deficit, providing a supportive, solid structure with which dental implants can integrate. Like natural teeth, dental implants rely on a healthy jaw bone for support. Dental implants require a sufficient level of bone to effectively restore missing teeth and oral function, but also help to preserve this bone once fully integrated with the jaw bone. Even if you have suffered bone loss, you may still be a candidate for dental implants after bone grafting treatment. During the bone grafting procedure, our oral surgeons source bone tissue from a bone bank, or from your own body. To create better bone support for dental implants, they work closely with you to determine the right treatment for your specific personal and oral health needs.

Bone Grafting from Advanced Oral Surgeons

Our oral surgeons incorporate advanced technology into bone grafting procedures, including guided tissue regeneration (GTR), platelet-rich growth factors (PRGF) and bone morphogenic protein (BMP). These techniques encourage normal healing, enhanced tissue response and elicit the growth of new bone tissue in treatment areas. Using PIEZOSURGERY® technology, bone grafting procedures become more minimally invasive, limiting damage to surrounding tissue by using precise, ultrasonic vibrations to cut targeted tissue and reduce healing time. As our patient you can always be assured that your comfort and well-being come first. Along with providing excellence in bone grafting care, we also offer relaxing IV sedation and other sedation dentistry options for a comfortable, positive experience.

Types of Bone Grafting Procedures

A sinus lift (augmentation) enables placement of dental implants in the upper molar and premolar regions of the mouth. Our doctors gently elevate the floor of the sinus cavity and add bone tissue beneath to increase bone height. In some cases, bone tissue may be added directly to the floor of the sinus cavity.

With this type of bone grafting procedure, we add bone tissue to the upper or lower arch, in areas where bone deterioration has occurred. Ridge augmentation rebuilds the natural contour of the arch, improving both function and appearance. Along with adding support for dental implants, ridge augmentation helps maintain natural contours of the face and diminish the look of facial “sinking” associated with tooth loss.

Socket preservation adds bone tissue right into the socket just after a tooth extraction. Often performed at the same time of extraction, this procedure preserves a missing tooth site for future placement of a dental implant.
